SETI Fiction: They’re Made Out Of Meat – redux

I wanted to revive this post because it is such a good story. I was refered to it by someone over at the Inktank Forums † Now that I have some actual readers¹ I thought I’d offer it up again for everyone to enjoy. Here’s a sample to whet² your appetite…

“They actually do talk, then. They use words, ideas, concepts?”
“Oh, yes. Except they do it with meat.”
“I thought you just told me they used radio.”
“They do, but what do you think is on the radio? Meat sounds. You know how when you slap or flap meat it makes a noise? They talk by flapping their meat at each other.”

² whet: 1) To sharpen (a knife, for example); hone. 2) To make more keen; stimulate: The frying bacon whetted my appetite.

PS – Thanks for visiting the Rustbelt. Regarding my CSS, I’m not sure what it is or how to correct it… but anyway, I’m glad you found it interesting enough to link.

  2. Hard to imagine some ET sentients observing us for any length of time saying, “Ooh! Aah! How advanced, maybe they will mentor us in the finer points of advanced existence.” Amazement that we manage anything at all seems more likely. Though maybe I’m being too harsh.
