
Saw an ad online for a certain search engine that was titled “top 10 shark infested beaches” which got me to thinking…
Beaches don’t typically have problems with sharks – it’s the waters that are infested. Then again…
References to “land sharks” appear in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century sailing chanties, referring to merchants who cheated sailors. Indeed, the use of “shark” alone may have originally designated unscrupulous people, perhaps from the German “Schurke” ? “someone acting immorally”, and only later applied to fish.
I think the source of concern can be traced back to our own childhood fears. Where the power of television and special effects (and great acting) could transform our mundane, everyday lives into images of unparalleled realism. warning: the following footage may be too much for younger viewers…
