wanna see me drool….

Canon today strengthens its EF-S series of lenses with the launch of a versatile new model: the EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS. With an equivalent focal length of 29-320mm, the lens offers an 11x zoom range – making it a powerful, lightweight alternative to carrying multiple lenses.

For EOS 50D, 40D, 30D, 20D, 20Da, Rebel XSi/XS, Digital Rebel XTi/XT and Digital Rebel.

Compact, lightweight and a wide magnification range - this standard zoom lens features a wide focal length range from normal to telephoto equivalent to 29-320mm in the 35mm format. It features an Optical Image Stabilizer for up to 4-stops of effective correction even at full zoom. Since Canon’s optical image stabilization system is in the lens, not in the camera, you can see the stabilized, steadier images through the viewfinder. And the circular aperture can give beautiful background blur effects. This new wide zoom ratio EF-S lens delivers excellent high-speed performance at an affordable price.

archshrk.com now supports Gravatars

With my recent spat of housekeeping (notice the changes to the sidebars?) I have also added support for gravatar.

What is a gravatar?

A gravatar, or Globally Recognized AVATAR, is quite simply an avatar image that follows you from weblog to weblog appearing beside your name when you comment on gravatar enabled sites. Avatars help identify your posts on web forums, so why not on weblogs?

How do I get a gravatar?

Signing up for a gravatar.com account is FREE, and all that’s required is your email address. Once you’ve signed up you can upload your avatar image and soon after you’ll start seeing it on gravatar enabled weblogs like mine!

If you don’t have a gravatar, you’ll get the dreaded dead pirate fish. If you need help with making a gravatar, let me know and I’ll give you a hand. Feel free to leave a comment just to see what it looks like.

Spam Blog and other stuff

Kristi, one of my many, many, loyal readers, had an interesting experience recently which she blogged about.

I started a new, private blog the other day as a diet journal. I have only posted twice to the darn thing. Now, it has been locked and marked as a spam blog. - Spam Blog

I suspect blogger has had to learn to be extra careful since so many spam sites are created this way. i bet if you contacted them, they would free it up right away. After all, a true spammer would just move on but a legit user would complain.

My last blog about Fancast received a comment from someone at FANCAST! How cool is that? I’m thinking her job must be to search for Fancast on the net and track it down.

I think you’re right about them searching the net for their name.
It’s happened a couple of times to me and a friend.

My friend was talking about some new gum that came out and they sent him some for free. I talked about a brand of reusable diapers and the owner offered me and my readers a discount code. My wife posted about a controversial baby book and got a lot of feedback within minutes. It’s called Google Alerts and I use it now to search for stories about sharks and homelessness (sorry, no homeless sharks yet).

The end of an era, or is that error

This site has always been a pet project for me. I never had any real goal in mind other than to express myself in ways that only the broad reach of the internet could. Unfortunately, that expression comes at a cost. Domain registration and web-hosting are part of that cost and to offset that cost, I’ve tried various ways of monetizing my site(s). The most obvious ones are the sidebar ads - google on the left and amazon on the right. Some more subtle ways have included Text Link Ads (under “see also”) but that seems to have suddenly dried up and Amazon Context Links which automatically turned certain words into amazon links (underlined links) but as you can see from the email below, that too is going away.

At this time, we will no longer be offering Context Links. Starting October 14, 2008, any Context Links on your site will be disabled and revert back to regular text. You do not have to take any action unless you’d like to modify your existing content to use some of the alternatives available which are outlined below.

These alternative widgets have similar functionalities and may perform even better. The first alternative is the Omakase Widget which automatically features ideal products based on Amazon’s unique knowledge about what works for your site, for your users and for the content of your page. Another great widget option is the Quick Linker. It allows you to link quickly and easily to relevant Amazon products as you write your blog posts or page content by including custom HTML tags right as you type.

But all is not doom and gloom. Google ads still pay for the site and the holidays and birthdays are coming up so some refined and specific amazon links should help out. More importantly, the site will be a little less cluttered as these random and often odd links are dropped from my pages. i also will be making subtle design changes to this site to improve the organization and reduce visual “noise”.

So if you have any suggestions, let me know.

10 months and still growing

Corbin is now 10 months old but you would hardly guess it. He comes from “large” stock (aka me) so despite being so young, he looks much older (as I always did). The downside to being above average is that his little boy arms are trying to lift a big boy body (and not making it). That’s why, at 10 months, Corbin still doesn’t crawl or like being on his tummy. However, he makes up for it in other ways.

At 10 months, Corbin is easily wearing 18-24 month clothing. This is sad because he has out passed his contemporaries who we were getting hand me downs from. Now we’re handing our things down to them.

As I mentioned, Corbin doesn’t crawl but loves to kick. I think Scott will recruit him for his family soccer team. He’s not mobile yet, but he loves to stand and lean on things or sit and pull and/or reach for things of interest. This is the amazing part. If he sees a toy he wants, he reaches his long arms out and grabs it. If its too far, he pulls on the blanket/play mat and drags it closer. If he still can’t reach it, he moves on to something else (he doesn’t sit and cry about it - praise God).

Corbin’s very curious. Whenever a car passes by, he leans over to see what made the noise. He follows the planes across the sky and loves to look into things trying to figure them out.

Among hes many great features and characteristics is his attitude. He’s very friendly, loves to meet new people and has a smile and laugh the melts your heart. Here’s some photos from the past week and you can see for yourself.

Mars Attacks!

Last weekend, while Julia and the other ladies from church were away for a women’s retreat, I spent Saturday with my good friend Scott (who has three kids under 3 years old). In the morning we met at the Zoo where we got to fish a bracelet out of the Koi pond, walk past some hibernating bears and eat on overpriced lunch - then go home. It wasn’t all that bad, but two fathers, caring for four kids, can make you so glad you have annual passes (and appreciate our wives).

While walking down Bear Canyon, I noticed something not quite right with one of the bears. Instead of being a playful, furry animal rummaging for food, she was a fully clothed hairless, human with a broom. Farther down, we passed a cage with a Lemur perched on top of a rock. Not as skittish as the typical zoo animal, I moved in closer to capture this elusive creature. Sadly, the cage was too strong. Either the Zoo is cutting back or maybe they think we’re not all that educated after all.

After the not-so-wild animals, we made or way to the escalators that lead to the future Elephant Mesa and on to the Polar Bears. I chose this route because we can see most of the zoo without having to push strollers up hill - very important to plan ahead when trying to manage young kids with little legs. But somebody decided to close the escalators (moving walkways actually) for maintenance. So we decided to eat and then take the other escalator to Gorilla Tropics - which is equally nice. Unfortunately, Scott’s oldest wasn’t too cooperative when it came to eating. She was only interested in the pieces of salt that came on her pretzel. And was quite offended at the idea of eating raisins because she “doesn’t like the seeds”. We think she’s referring to the occasional stem but whatever.
