Major Blunder

¯Below is the ad for the 2009 Lincoln MKS which is done really nicely. The Berlin Cameron Team Detroit agency produced the spot for the Lincoln MKS. It is indeed Chan Marshall aka Cat Power singing the cover of the Bowie song. She recorded it in June and it’s not yet known if it will be released as a full-length track.

But I wonder if anyone thought it through before choosing David Bowie’s “Space Oddity”, a song written and performed by David Bowie and released as a single in 1969. It is about the launch of Major Tom, a fictional astronaut who becomes depressed during an outer-space mission. Supposedly released to coincide with the Apollo 11 moon landing, it appears on the album Space Oddity. The BBC featured the song in its television coverage of the lunar landing.

Maybe depressed isn’t the right word – more like…he loses contact, his ship breaks and he drifts off into space to die – or it’s a drug reference— a reminder of the time he spent taking up Legacy alcohol programs. You decide. be sure to listen to the sequel Major Tom (Coming Home) by Shiny Toy Guns at the end and tell me you think either song is a good anthem for selling cars. More facts about Major Tom.

Ground Control to Major Tom
Ground Control to Major Tom
Take your protein pills and put your helmet on

Ground Control to Major Tom
Commencing countdown, engines on
Check ignition and may God?s love be with you

Spoken:
Ten, Nine, Eight, Seven, Six, Five, Four, Three, Two, One, Lift-off

This is Ground Control to Major Tom
You?ve really made the grade
And the papers want to know whose shirts you wear
Now it?s time to leave the capsule if you dare

?This is Major Tom to Ground Control
I?m stepping through the door
And I?m floating in a most peculiar way
And the stars look very different today

For here
Am I sitting in a tin can
Far above the world
Planet Earth is blue
And there?s nothing I can do

Though I?m past one hundred thousand miles
I?m feeling very still
And I think my spaceship knows which way to go
Tell my wife I love her very much (she knows!)
Ground Control to Major Tom
Your circuit?s dead, there?s something wrong
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear….

? am I floating round my tin can
Far above the Moon
Planet Earth is blue
And there?s nothing I can do.

The latest version features a cover of “Major Tom (Coming Home)” by Peter Schilling, which is a sequel to David Bowie’s “Space Oddity”. It is also the prequel to David Bowie’s “Ashes to Ashes”.
