The Original Tommy’s
It finally happened, they’ve opened an Original Tommy’s in San Diego! We tried to go there for lunch yesterday but the drive thru was backed up to the street and there was no parking anywhere nearby. It even looked like the walk-in line was out the door. So I may try again tonight with a friend but I may just wait until I have more time or it’s less busy (whichever comes first)
They serve hot dogs, french fries and tamales in all locations - but their burger made them World Famous. Every burger is prepared to order, and extra portions of chili, tomato, onions, pickle or mustard are served at no extra charge.
Tommy’s was founded in 1946 by Tom Koulax. The son of Greek immigrants, Tom engaged in various business ventures before founding the Original Stand at Beverly and Rampart Boulevards in Los Angeles. It took some time before the public discovered his small stand. However, the many long hours of hard work, and a dedication toward quality and fast service finally paid off. By the mid-6O’s, the little stand had gained a reputation like none other for the appetites of L.A. burger lovers.
In the 60’s, Tom had to expand his operation to accommodate the growth of his customers. Soon he had acquired the entire southeast corner of the intersection. Later, he had to add parking on the southwest corner. Soon after, he had to add a second serving station. By this time, it was apparent the public was hooked.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard of Original Tommy’s. For now, I’m definitely faithful to In N Out burgers!

Apparently a sourthern Cal thing. Too bad, sounds like someplace I’d want to try.
And the name? Makes me think of Perfect Tommy, one of my 2nd-tier heroes.

In-n-Out is really good too. I remember when they finally opened in Phoenix (used to live there too). It’s not the fair to compare the two though. They are very different style of burger joints. I would also include Del Taco in one of SoCals greatest gifts to the world. It’s not as “good for you” as Chipotle or Baja Fresh but is good in it’s own way. You know, that greasy spoon kind of way. Yum!

Also, sorry about the bad links. I was messing around with some settings and messed it all up. Hopefully, I got it all fixed but give it time to filter through the internet. Thanks.
